Naomi is the Project Manager for the Making and Knowing Project. She is also an intern at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the
Departments of Science Research and Paper Conservation, studying tannin-based inks in Islamic texts.
An example of some preliminary experimental planning for historical reconstructions from a scientific perspective on iron-tannin inks from Fall 2015:
She graduated from
Barnard College in May 2015 with a degree in Physics and minors in Mathematics and Spanish.
In 2014-15, she served as the inaugural Science Resident in Conservation with the
Columbia University Ancient Ink Lab, a collaboration between the University Libraries and the Nano Initiative. The group utilizes cutting-edge scientific techniques to understand and characterize ancient manuscripts, focusing on carbon-based black inks from ancient Egypt.
She has participated in two National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU):
- Department of Chemistry & Material Science Program, Washington State University - nanotechnology group focusing on synthesis and characterization of nanoparticles. For more information about her work on organic porphyrin nanorods:
- Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Utah - experimental condensed matter laboratory investigating superconductivity of materials under pressure. During her time there, she became machine shop certified, and designed and made custom pieces for the lab. For more information about her project:
Naomi has also served as a production assistant to the Technical Director of the
Barnard Theatre Department, working in the wood shop to build the sets and working closely with the production team to set up lighting, sound, and video in the theatre. She has also worked at the
Armory Center for the Arts in California in the Studio Department.
